Foalsleigh was a great place to work, from the setting to the job and the clients. The main thing I did there was to stone clad a new build. We got to use some lovely local slate stone from the next valley over. I also built a little surround for a small brook that ran through the garden. For the cladding the client wanted a drystone look to the stone, so whilst building we would bed the stone on a thin layer of muck and then at the end of the day rake it back and brush it out to give it that dry look. There were lots of windows and doors to build around which is always time consuming but really worked well against the grey aluminium frames. We also laid some very rustic reclaimed railway sleepers above the windows and doors for the lintels, these combined with the cladded top half really worked well with all the natural products. Once the cladding was finished I then moved onto building a surround for a outlet of a small brook that ran through the garden. This was a really fun little project using the same stone as the house. Although to finish the top off I was allowed to do it how I felt best, so I went rummaging through a pile of old stone they had in the farm yard looking for some big flat stone that I could use. I managed to find enough to do the job, this was a real cool job in itself as it wasn’t just a case of bedding them on top. I actually split the stone down to the correct thickness with the hammer and chisel and then cut to the correct width to fit the top of the wall. As you can see in the pictures once I split the stone it revealed some really amazing colours which was great to have on show.
