Gara Bridge has got to be the project that I have had the most freedom with. The client had an unused area at the back of his house which he wanted to transform into an entertaining area. He had an idea of things he wanted to incorporate but we both worked together to design and develop his ideas. I really loved this project as there was a lot of stonework to do but I was also heavily involved with the whole project. We choose a lovely limestone from Somerset for this job. We started by digging out the overgrown area which when done revealed a surprisingly large area, leaving us loads of room for fitting in everything the client wanted. We poured a concrete pad to give us a hardstanding to work off, and then had to build a large retaining wall around the back of the pad to retain the high bank behind. Once this was done it was time to really make some solid plans to move ahead with. The clients wanted to incorporate a BBQ, pizza oven, bar, Open fireplace, seating and a roofed area. We finally got a plan drawn up for positions of these things and from there it was time to start building. This was certainly one of the most enjoyable jobs i’ve done, being able to be free and add to the designs as and where I though it would work. And being able to build the circular open fire place was amazing, certainly a one off and not something i’ve ever seen done before.
