Knap mill

Knap mill was a lovely job to work on in the beautiful setting of the avon valley. A family house that had been renovated and largely extended. My part was to stone clad the new extension with reclaimed stone from an old barn that used to be in its place. I also built a couple new stone pillars at the entrance to the property which were a lovely statement on entrance. The stone was lovely to use, it was a mix of slate, limestone and white acres, this really made for a very dramatic finish with all the different colours and shapes involved. It’s always enjoyable building with reclaimed stone especially when it came from that same spot originally. On each side of the stonework there were parts cladded in a burnt larch which for me fitted in perfect with the overall look of it. When I had finished the cladding the client was so happy that they then asked me if I would build two circular pillars at the entrance to the property. For these we had to source some more stone as all the reclaimed stuff had been used up, we managed to source some lovely soft slate from a farm just down the road that was a very good match for the rest. It was the perfect stone for the job as it was very soft which allowed me to dress it with the hammer to fit around the curve of the pillar. Once finished they gave a great entrance to their wonderful new home.
