Frittiscombe

My job at Frittiscombe was a repair of an old Devon drystone wall, a large tree had come over in a storm onto the top of the wall. I had to sort the stone out and dig the bank back to give my the space I needed to build the wall back up to last. The stone was a lovely Devon slate which was fairly soft, this made it very easy to work with as I really didn’t have to dress the stone much. I started by cleaning the area of stone and removing some parts of the wall that were still standing but compromised, I then proceeded to remove all the dirt and mud that had amassed behind the wall. I was able to take it back down to the bedrock that it was originally built off. There’s no better or more secure foundation to build off than bedrock itself. All the stone was fairly small in size but I did try to use the bigger stones at the bottom of the wall, I also put aside all the bigger flat stones which I used half way up as through stones. What this does is to spread the weight of the next section of wall evenly over the bottom half. When I was getting up to finished height I had an awful lot of smaller stones left over which I decided to cap the wall off with a herringbone pattern. I was really happy with the result of the repair and after abit of weathering it will fit right back in as if it never came down.
