The Pool was another very unique job that I got to take on, the client was a keen wild swimmer up in the rivers and pools of Dartmoor. So when the chance for him to have his own wild swimming pool arose he couldn’t resist. The Pool was fed from a natural spring further up the valley that ran as a stream down to the estuary further down. The Pool was built with a hard blue slate from Devon, the stone was a larger grade of stone which is sold for hedging. We used this stone as the client wanted a very natural look which we certainly managed to achieve on this project. The blue colour of the stone was a perfect choice as combined with that gin clear spring water and the bright sunshine it gave the water the most beautiful glistening blue colour. When I started the hole was already dug ready for me to get straight on with the stonework. It was a very labour intensive job moving the big stone about and getting it to where I needed it but once set out it was a pleasure to lay. Although it was only a hedging grade of stone it really was a lovely stone to lay, on the whole quite flat and easily split with the hammer. The shape of the pool was very unique and was a very free flowing shape, this really fitted in with the whole feel of the place and certainly the meandering stream that fed it. The build itself was also a very free flowing, different to others in the way that there were no use of tape measures levels or string lines. It was all just built by eye, and built so it looked and felt right. I think the end result certainly show how relaxed this whole build was.
