The Threshing Barn was a job that my dad managed to get, it was the perfect job for us to both get on together due to our shared love of stonework. An old threshing barn once stood on the plot and it was our job to rebuild it as it would have originally been built. For this we used the stone that was reclaimed from the original barn and built it with solid stone walls which were 2ft wide with lime putty. This really was a one off build that I loved getting to do with my Dad. The build started off with quite a painstaking task, this was to sort through the piles of stone, rubble and just rubbish that had been piled up by the previous occupant. This was quite some task separating all the stone into different piles, we had general building stone, then quoins which are used for the corners of the buildings and then the through stones which were large flat stones whose job it was to brace the wall and spread the load evenly. Once done the build was started and Dad laid the first few stones of what was a mammoth job. We started in mid summer which was a job in itself, humping around large stones in blistering heat. What the heat also meant was that every time we built a section it needed to be covered with hessian and continuously kept wet throughout the day to avoid the lime putty drying too quick. What a unique job this was, something that these days would never get done due to building regs. We only had the chance as it was a listed barn, it was a great feeling being able to build the barn back to how it was originally built and also lay the exact same stones that the masons would have used first. Even better it was a pleasure to get to do it with my Dad.
